      On 1st August, 1788, " John Heddle, writer, and notary public in Kirkwall," was appointed Town Clerk during the pleasure of the Council, " with a salary of ten pounds sterling, and all the fees, profits, and emoluments of the said office, according as the same have been in use to be paid to his predecessors."
