Kate and William Traill Heddle arrived in Oyama in 1913. The family had previously lived in Manitoba, had owned a store in Vancouver and then in Nanaimo. They arrived with four children, Constance, Grace, Dorothy and Dunbar.

The Heddles built a large home on the west side of Oyama in 1914 and purchased a Cadillac in 1915. Dorothy married Jack Stephens of Oyama and Dunbar married Alice Martlew of Vernon. W. T. Heddle died in 1929 and in 1938 Kate Heddle with her girls, Grace and Connie, moved to Victoria. Dunbar and Alice remained in Oyama with Alice playing an active role in the community. Dick Heddle, their son, has donated numerous family photographs to the Lake County Museum and Archives.
