- Note: Cossack's "Kirkwall in the Orkneys" book gives John Flett as the father of Elizabeth Flett who married John Heddle. However, Burke's Landed Gentry and Records of the Earldom of Orkney, as well as the research of J. G. F Moodie Heddle, all give Alexander son of John.
And the "State of the Process" indicates that a John Flett of Gruthay died between 1746 and 1757 and was in his seventies - it is likely that this reference is to this John Flett of Gruthay, hence the estimated birth.
